Roberta's Las Vegas Real Estate Blog: Google Chrome - Las Vegas REALTOR® Alert

Google Chrome - Las Vegas REALTOR® Alert

If you haven't heard, tomorrow, Tuesday September 2nd, Google is scheduled to release it's own beta version of a web browser called Chrome. When it becomes available the Chrome download will be at this link...

Google Chrome

Even though Google has been supporting the Mozilla Firefox browser and recently extended a contract with them through 2011, they've decided to put out their own. It's supposedly been in development for 4 years and was done to make all browsers more powerful by building a 'solid foundation for modern web applications'.

Some of the features will include that it is multi-threaded with each process having it's own memory. Tabs, that will be above the address bar rather than below, will operate in their own memory and theoretically only one tab would be effected by crashes, not the entire browser. A built in Process Manager, that will monitor tab by tab which web aps are hogging your CPU and Bandwidth. A built in Javascript they've developed that is supposed to run Web aps faster, called V8. A Tabs page that displays 9 of you most frequented sites, searches, and recently bookmarked or closed sites. An auto complete in the address bar, and with built in keyword suggestions. Plus built in anti-phishing, and controls over pop-ups and web aps with Googles 'Gears'. You can find some screen shots here.

For those of us bloging, or have sites on the net, a heads-up. You may want to test drive Chrome with your sites to see how they display, and if you'll need to make any changes. Worse than not being found on Google would be for our clients to find our sites not working well with their new web browser, especially if it gains anywhere near the popularity of it's search engine.

Good point about test driving our websites, Roberta.  I'll make sure to do that.  Great advice.

Roberta - This is great and timely information.  Thanks so much for sharing it!  What's up with that first comment?

Roberta:  Yes... I read about this today, too.  It will be quite interesting to see what Google does with this.  And wow... you seem to know this thing inside out and backwards... which, by the way, is often how I do things... LOL.  Thanks so much for sharing.

Kristina: Yes, it may work just fine, but never hurts to check...just in case.

Jason: Thought it might be handy to know it's out there tomorrow. The comment...spam IMO, didn't have anything to do with this post.

Karen Anne: Hopefully it's not an issue and hard to say if it will become popular. The IT stuff....helps to have a techie in the house to 'splain it! I'd do it the same way you do! LOL

Roberta, you don't mess around :)  You are quick with information!  I just read that today and I think you had more information in your blog post than the article on MSN!

I cant wait to try it out. I have read the comic book they have put out. Very impressive stuff. V8 sounds really promising too.

Roberta - Thank you so much for the information, I am a google man and very much into any new web networking info.

Tony: It helps to have that techie sharing the office. He's actually a biz consultant, so he'd dangerous when turning up information for just about anything. These are just the highlights that I could remember, and he's had this for a while. The 'Chrome' image he did, btw. Google just used plain text and the button, and pretty bland.

Tony & Darcy: Always glad to help out when I can!

Naji: Yes, should be interesting to see how well everything in the comic book works. Only concerns when we discussed this would be.....if this is a shift from Microsoft domination to everything web to become Googlized, and if the auto key words are unbiased, or lean to Google revenue generation.

Robert: No problem. Anyone with a net presence needs to be aware this is coming out, so they don't get shut out.

Being a geek, I have been tracking this as well. I like the phisolophy of google:simple. Hopefully this new browser will work to my expecation.I live firefox but I do not mind keep multiple browsers in my computer. I use firefox 95% of the time but I also keep safari and IE for testing purposes.

Huiting: Yes, have to test on the different browsers since there isn't a universal standard. I expect a few glitches, and since I'm using it now I'll detail a few below.
Kathy: Not a problem! Thought some folks would appreciate knowing about it.
Charles: It seems to be a mix of both. Interesting to only have the search from the address bar and all the browser's results dropping down as you type.
Here's what I've noticed from my limited use of Chrome.
  • My Active Rain home page took a few tries before it would load. Proxy Error Message.
  • My AR Blog took MANY more tries and a multiple proxy error messages before it finally loaded.
  • My KW website loaded fast, property search feed from GLVAR loaded and worked well, my AR blog feed was SLOW to load.
  • My GLVAR website is pretty basic, and no problems there.
  • My primary website loaded MUCH faster, the flash intro loaded in a blink of an eye.
  • Embedded content...YouTube, my Photo slideshows loaded slowly, and at first had no audio. After several tries it 'fixed' itself.
  • Blog pages in general seemed to take a while to open - long blog pages with images and embedded content seemed to load much slower.
  • None of the features of Google Toolbar - Spell Check, Auto Link, translation, etc.
  • Clicking on this individual post page to leave this comment - again, slow to load.

Still early in the game like any new software, hopefiully they'll work out some of the glitches as they go along.
